Bastrop blanks DCS at jamboree

By Matt Philley

The Delhi Charter Gators are stepping up to Class 2A after the LHSAA redistricting process and they stepped way up for their jamboree game this year to play the Class 4A Bastrop Rams. After watching their cross-town rival Delhi Bears get blanked 28-0 by the Richwood Rams, the Gators didn’t fare any better falling 38-0 to the home team in only 30 minutes of football.
DCS’ first drive was a harbinger of things to come as the Gators took the opening kickoff, gained eight yards and punted. Bastrop then reeled off 38-0 straight points on touchdown passes of 15, 42, and 9 yards. Showing a very balanced offense, the Rams added three rushing TDs of 9, 16 and 10 yards as well. The offensive disparity was 296 total yards for the Rams and only 51 total offensive yards for the Gators. Not that Bastrop needed any help, but Delhi Charter turned the ball over two times in the first 15 minutes when they couldn’t catch two short kickoffs. This gave the Rams excellent starting position and limited the Gators’ offensive snaps in the half.
On the night, Delhi Charter had seven total fumbles and lost three while Bastrop fumbled once. In the lone DCS highlight of the night, Desmond Longino intercepted a pass in the second half and returned it 30 yards before being pushed out of bounds. However, despite first and goal at the nine, a fumble on third down loss 17 yards and senior quarterback Mason Hales desperation pass was knocked down on fourth down.
“We have a lot of things to work on that’s for sure,” Delhi Charter Head Coach Brett Raley said after the game. “Bastrop is a good 4A team with a lot of skill players. We knew all that coming in we just wanted to try to limit their snaps as much as possible and the turnovers just killed us in the first half.”
Next week, Delhi Charter will open the season and try to get the season off on a positive note against its former district foe, the Oak Grove Tigers. The Tigers stayed in Class 1A while the Gators moved up to 2A for the next two seasons. These two teams faced off in the game of the season last year that the Tigers eventually won 18-12 in two overtimes. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Swamp.
