Dragons down Bears in opener

The Mangham Dragons opened their regular season with a 33-6 victory over the Delhi Bears last Friday night.
“We didn’t play well versus Delhi,” Mangham head coach Tommy Tharp said. “At times we ran the ball effectively, but made to many fundamental mistakes to win versus some of the teams we have on our schedule. I was pleased with our effort, but we have a long ways to go to become a good football team. Defensively we ran to the ball well. We didn’t make plays at times where I thought we could have and had a few interceptions, but we did play hard. I was especially pleased with our Middle Linebacker Bradley Cleary. I thought he did a great job in his first game at that position and really, really, did what he was coached to do.”
Sophomore Adam Eley only attempted one pass during the game but he hit senior Donovan Haynes with it for a 19-yard touchdown.
Haynes also led the Dragons in rushing yards with 17 carries for 155 yards and one touchdown.
Tyler Haynes had eight runs for 137 yards and two touchdowns. Cam Wilmore ran the ball six times for 32 yards and a touchdown.
Also adding yards to the Dragon offense were Eley with three carries for five yards, Jimmy Criff with two carries for 21 yards and Joe Williams with two carries for 14 yards.
Kolby Poindexter added to the Dragon’s win by going three for five on PAT attempts.
This week, the Dragons will be on the Road to take on St. Frederick at 7 p.m. Sept. 8.
“St. Frederick is another animal,” Tharp said. “A finesse oriented spread option team that stretches you from sideline to sideline. Their quarterback is an exceptional athlete that can really move his feet well and still throws the ball effectively. We will have to play our best to not get embarrassed.”
Delhi will be at home as the host Vidalia at 7 p.m. Sept. 8.
