Lady Hornets finish playoffs

Red River provided some much needed competition and it served us well against Mamou in the semi-final played at University Center on the campus of Southeastern in Hammond. We had expected a tough battle, for Mamou had upset Rapides, who was erroneously ranked as the #1 seed. We didn’t know that at the time so we hit the court running. It was like old times leading 32-16 at half. We scored on the first possession in the third to make it an eighteen-point lead.
Then we met the enemy. And as Pogo said it was us. We scored but two more points in the most devastating quarter ever. We led 36-35 going into the fourth. Mamou took the lead on their first possession 37-36. We got it back 41-37. They were not intimidated and tied it up 41-41. We got six in a row and that was about the size of it.
We ended the game with a seven point run to win 54-44.
That set up the state championship game with the monsters of the midway, Madison Prep of Baton Rouge. Sound familiar? The same school that made our boys #2. Again, I have no idea how they are eligible to play in the non-select category. It is rumored that after AAU competition in the summer in Baton Rouge the girls of various teams get together and decide which school they want to attend. If that is true, our girls were playing a stacked deck of all-stars.
It appeared that way for in the first four minutes we were down 0-12. We never recovered as the quarter ended 9-21. They increased it to eighteen, 20-38 by half-time.
It seems we recovered from the shell shock and began to play with them. They only outscored us by one in the third 28-47 which makes one wonder how much difference the two starters that we lost in December, Emonni Baker and Shamari Franklin, would have made.
But what do they say about water and the bridge? Final score 39-56.
Following are the scorers of the two games, the semi-final first: T’Kira Fuller 19-10, Jalexius Kelly 8-0, Mykiya Wilson 10-5, Micaela Wilson 12-15, Tashunna Neal 3-7, Taleria Cowart 2-2.
Others on the team are: Ashonti Hunter, Tamaya Miller, Edberly Minnieweather and Lakevia Anderson. Most capable Managers are C’Na Duckworth and Makayla Hunter.
Coach Jo Sneed and assistant Ron Ellis are to be complimented on a marvelous season and though they lose Micaela Wilson to Kansas University and Emonni Baker graduates, I predict another dominant season for the Lady Hornets. I can hardly wait.
