Riverfield Raiders win to move record to 2-0

The Riverfield Academy Raiders traveled to Jackson, Miss., Friday night to match up with the Hillcrest Academy Cougars.
From early on in the game it because obvious that Riverfield had the strongest team.
The first half ended with the Raiders leading 42-0. A very fast moving second half with the game clock being in the continuous run mode saw the Raiders adding 13 more points to their score while the Cougars gained 12. The 55-12 victory put the Raiders at 3-1 on the season and 2-0 in district play.
The Raiders gained 240 yards offensively. 238 of them were gained rushing while two yards were gained with the pass.
Cole Garrett was the leading rusher in the game. He churned out 100 yards and scored one touchdown. Zach Carnegie added 47 yards and scored twice. Nicholas Heath and Garrett Brakefield had 44 and 8 yards respectively while Hudson Brakefield had 39 yars and scored three touchdowns.
Braxton Shelton was one for one in the passing game. His two yard completion to John Michael Whatley was good for a Raider touchdown. The defensive play of the night was Kincaid Ryan’s second quarter 58-yard pick six. Jackson Shelton also picked off a Cougar pass early in the first quarter.
Special team highlights included a 65-yard kickoff return by Hudson Brakefield. Zach Carnegie returned a first quarter punt 28 yards before being brought down. Before the game was over every player on the sidelines got some playing action.
The Raiders will be on the road again tomorrow night. It won’t be a real long road trip, though. They will be in action in Bastrop at Prairie View Academy. PVA comes into the game at 4-0 while the Raiders are at 3-1. Given the team records and the rivalry of the two schools, it should prove to be one of the best Friday night match ups anywhere around.
Head coach Boyd Cole had these comments earlier this week:
“I am very proud of the kids for the way they played Friday night. We knew going in that if we played well we would win the game.
“This Friday night will be a big test against a very good PVA team. They are 4-0 and playing extremely well right now. We have not played in three years but this rivalry is very big with RA and PVA. I hope everyone will come out and take the short drive to Bastrop and cheer the Raiders on to a 4-1 start on the season.”
Calling on all Raider fans to be at PVA tomorrow night to support your 2017 Raider football team.
Kick off is at 7 p.m.
