Young RA team off to good start

The 2017 Riverfield Academy varsity baseball season is underway and at this early point in the season, the Raiders have a 3-3 record.
This year’s team is a very young squad with no juniors or seniors playing. The team consists of five sophomores, six freshman and four eighth graders. In spite of being so young, this team has competed well this far in the season, posting an 11-1 victory over the River Oaks Mustangs and a 12-1 victor over the VCA Lions last week.
Spencer Daniel, Cayden Martin and Tristan Middleton handled the pitching responsibilities for the Raiders in the River Oaks and VCA games.
Martin started the River Oaks game with Middleton relieving him in the fifth inning. Martin had seven strikeouts on the night.
Daniel was the starting pitcher in the VCA game. He struck out five batters. Middleton relieved Daniel in the firth inning to finish the game . He had two strike outs in the fifth inning.
Raider bats were very active in the VCA game with Garrett Brakefield, Austin Salisbury, Spencer Daniel and Cayden Martin al hitting doubles. Brakefield, Martin, Middleton and Fisher Carpenter all hit singles in the game. Brian Williamson singled twice.
The Raiders missed a game against Claiborne Academy on Monday due to rain and soggy field conditions. The are scheduled to play at home tonight against ACCS at 5:30 p.m. Also, the Raiders have a home game scheduled against PVA on Saturday afternoon.
District play for the Raiders will begin on March 21 with St. Aloysius at home.
This year’s team is young but they play with plenty of heart and are developing quite well. So come out to Raider field for plenty of great Riverfield Academy baseball action.
