Gilley elected as new Richland Parish Sheriff

Gary Gilley is the new sheriff of Richland Parish.

Gilley won the election Saturday by a margin of 56.35 percent with 4,497 votes. Incumbent sheriff Lee Harrell received 3,483 votes.

Meanwhile, in Police Jury District 1, Steve Craig defeated Gerald “Mooney” Washington by 71.72 percent with 629 votes to Washington’s 248.

Patrick Stubblefield was elected as the new police juror in District 2 by 62.08 percent with 537 votes to 328 votes for Zack McDowell.

Incumbent Sharon Gee was re-elected by 61.67 percent of the vote in District 3 with 391 votes to challenger Larry Lockeby’s 243.

In District 4, incumbent James “Steve” Lofton was re-elected by 51.1 percent of the vote with 466 votes to opponent Joe Lively’s 446.

In District 5, Paul Slayter defeated incumbent police juror Gordon “Scooter” Medlin by 52.2 percent. Slayter received 468 votes while Medlin receved 427.

Incumbent Althan Smith was also returned to office in Police Jury District 6 with 60.16 percent of the vote. Smith got 376 votes while challenger Johnny “Renael” Jones got 249.

In Police Jury District 7, Cecil Reddick won the election by a 53.03 percent margin. He received 563 votes to 519 for opponent Bobby Free.

In District 9, Roy Wiggins Jr., won the police jury position by a 56.86 percent margin. He recieved 543 votes while opponent David Barton received 43.14.

In statewide elections, Democrat John Bel Edwards was elected as the Louisiana’s new governor.

Edwards won the election by a margin of 56.11 percent with a total of 646,860 of the state’s voters casting ballots for him while 505,929 voted for opponent David Vitter.

In Richland Parish, Vitter carried the vote by 50.35 percent with 3,984 votes to Edwards’ 3,928.

Billy Nungesser was elected as the state’s lieutenant governor by a margin of 55.38 percent with 628,864 votes to 506,578 votes for his opponent Melvin L. “Kip” Holden.

Nungesser carried Richland Parish by 64.01 percent with 4,875 votes to Holden’s 2,741.

In the race for attorney general, Jeff Landry defeated incumbent James D. “Buddy” Caldwell by a margin of 56.3 percent. Landry received 610,443 votes while Caldwell received 473,869.

Caldwell carried Richland Parish by 58.35 percent with 4,381 votes to Landry’s 3,127.
