Possible severe weather forecast for much of Louisiana

The Louisiana Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP) is monitoring potentially dangerous weather conditions expected to start this evening in north Louisiana and continue in other regions of the state for the next few days. The National Weather Service (NWS) says showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop along and ahead of a frontal boundary.  Damaging straight line winds and hail are the primary threat, but the NWS is not ruling out the possibility of isolated tornadoes.  The storms may produce 60 to 70 mph winds which the NWS says is capable of downing trees and power lines.

GOHSEP Director Kevin Davis said, “The National Weather Service indicates these dangerous storms could be possible as we go into the weekend.  Look for advisories from local emergency officials and check your local forecast.  Conditions can rapidly change during this type of event.”

Quarter size hail or larger could be associated with many of the thunderstorms.  The NWS says ½ to 1 inch of rain will be common with this event.  Some areas could receive up to 2 inches.
