Delhi Charter swamps D’Arbonne Woods, 63-19

Bernice – Delhi Charter returned to Bernice for a football game for the first time since its first year playing LHSAA football back in 2005. The outcome this year was much better than the last trip as the Gators jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 63-19 victory over the D’Arbonne Woods Timberwolves in the first ever meeting between the schools.
“My last trip to this stadium back in 2005 doesn’t bring back fond memories as we lost 22-20 while only giving up about 50 yards of offense to the Bernice Bears,” DCS Head Coach Brett Raley said before the game. “We had two interceptions returned for touchdowns in that game in the second half that cost us our first victory in week two of our first year playing LHSAA football.”
DCS made a few personnel changes on offense this week and it paid dividends early as Michael Woods scored three TDs on runs of 32, 2, and 14 yards in the first 15 minutes of play while Joshua Poland and Mason Hale added runs of 8 and 31 respectively in the first quarter. All that added up to a 29-6 lead after only one quarter and a 50-6 halftime lead.
Wingback and backup quarterback Azavier Stubblefield was the star of the second quarter as he had a 1-yard TD run and a 95-yard jaunt to end the quarter after the Gator defense tallied its four interception of the half. That interception turned back the Wolves threat after a muffed punt return gave them the ball deep in Gator territory. Poland, Trayveon Houston, J’Quan Polly and Martez Allen all had interceptions.
With the clock running in the second half and DCS playing mostly the JV team, D’arbonne Woods managed two scores but the Gator countered with Chester McDaniel’s 51-yard run and Kameron Wicker’s 5-yard TD pass to Bobby Benson. In another change on special teams, Trenton Jinks connected on five-of-six point-after kicks which accounted for the 63-19 margin.
There were a couple more records tied or broken in this game as Stubblefield’s 95-yard run to end the half is now the longest run from scrimmage in school history but it wasn’t as exciting as Kimo Williford’s dramatic 90-yarder to beat St. Fredrick back in 2015. Also, the 63 points tonight ties the record for most scored in a game and matches the 63 scored against Sarepta in 2008.
DCS will have Homecoming next week as they return to the Swamp to take on the Beekman Charter Tigers. The Tigers are 0-5 on the season after a 35-12 loss to Mangham last week. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
