Riverfield takes the win over PVA by 34-18

The Riverfield Academy Raiders traveled to Bastrop last Friday night to take on the Prairie View Academy Spartans.
Despite some of the predictions that were made before the game, PVA did not win. In a good, hard-fought contest, the Raiders came out on top. The win gave the Raiders a 4-1 record at the midway point of their regular season.
On their first possession of the game, the Raiders took over the ball on their own 49 yard line. They took the ball 51 yards on six plays for their first touchdown of the night. The drive ended with a 25-yard run by Zach Carnegie but the PAT failed. When the first quarter concluded Riverfield was leading 6-0.
The Raiders scored again midway through the second quarter on a 32-yard run by Cole Garrett. Zach Carnegie added two on the PAT giving the Raiders a 14-0 advantage. Just as the time was running out on the second quarter, the Spartans put up their first points of the night with a two-yard passing play which ended a 57-yard drive. Their PAT failed, sending the teams into halftime with the Raiders leading 14-16.
Kincaid Ryan gave the Raiders good field position as he took the opening kick off of the second half and ran it back 24 yards. The Raiders were four plays into the opening drive of the second half when it ended abruptly as they turned the ball over on a fumble. PVA took possession on the Raider 10-yard line and two plays later they scored on an 82-yard run. The PAT failed but with 8:45 left on the third quarter clock, the Raider lead had been cut to 14-12. Riverfield’s next possession, though plagued with penalties, three of them against the Raiders and two against PVA, resulted in a 63-yard drive ending with a three-yard touchdown run by Zach Carnegie. The third quarter ended with PVA having possession of the ball and the Raiders leading 20-12.
Early in the fourth quarter, PVA struck again on a one-yard touchdown run. Their PAT failed but the touchdown cut the Raider lead to 20-18 and with less than two minutes gone off the fourth quarter clock it was a two-point ball game once again. On PVA’s kickoff, Kincaid Ryan once again gave the Raiders good field position, this time on a 30-yard return. Five plays later, Cole Garrett broke lose on a 29-yard touchdown run. The PAT failed but the Raider lead was up to 26-18.
PVA’s next drive fell short as they failed the complete a pass on fourth and eight and the ball was turned over to the Raiders on downs. Riverfield capitalized and took the ball 79 yards on five plays. The drive ended on a 35-yard TD run by Cole Garrett. Garrett Brakefield added two on the PAT, putting the Raiders up by a score of 34-18.
PVA’s final drive of the game was nine plays long but ended abruptly as they turned the ball over on a fumble. When the final horn sounded, Riverfield was on top of a very hard fought contest on behalf of both teams by a score of 34-18.
The Raider gained 388 yards of offense on the night with 380 of it being on the ground. Cole Garrett had an awesome game rushing for 257 yards on 22 carries and scoring three touchdowns. Zach Carnegie had 80 yards on 11 carries and scored twice. Garrett Brakefield had 40 yards on six carries. Nicholas Heath added three yards on two carries.
In the passing game, Garrett Brakefield was two for four, completing passes to Kyle Bolton and Zack Rockett for four yards a piece.
The Raider defense is to be highly commended for an excellent job of keeping a highly explosive team contained throughout the contest.
Tomorrow night’s game will be played at home. It will be a district match up against Central Hinds.
The Raiders need a win to give them a good advantage in district action going into the second half of the regular season. It should be another great match-up.

“We played our most complete ballgame on Friday night against a very good PVA team. They were 4-0 coming into the contest.
“This week we have a very big district game coming up with Central Hinds. They are 2-0 in district and so are we.
“This will give usa big boost toward a district championship this season.
“They are playing very well right now but so are we. It should be a great game at Joe Meeks Field.
“I hope everyone will come out and support the Raiders this week.”
