Riverfield wins eighth straight game in a row

The Riverfield Raiders posted another win this past Friday night as they defeated the Claiborne Academy in Homer.
The win gives the Raiders an 8-1 season record going into the final regular season game tomorrow night.
For the second week in a row, the Raiders pretty much controlled the momentum of the game and dominated the field. The Raiders outscored the Rebels 20-6 in the first quarter and 24-0 in the second quarter to go into halftime with a 44-6 lead. In the fast moving second half, both teams scored one more time in the third quarter. The fourth quarter was scoreless, bringing the final score to 51-14.
First quarter highlights for the Raiders included an 18-yard and a 14-yard touchdown run by Cole Garrett. Garrett also recovered a Rebel fumble while on defense and returned it 27 yards for the third Raider touchdown of the quarter. Also defensively in the quarter, Cameron Williams picked off a Rebel pass and returned it 13 yards before being brought down.
Second quarter scoring for the Raiders began with a 27-yard pass completion from Garrett Brakefield to Zach Rockett good for the fourth Raider touchdown on the night. Two more touchdowns came on an eight-yard run by Hudson Brakefield and a one-yard run by Braxton Shelton. Kaleb Clark, who was five in kicking extra points in the game, also kicked a 30-yard field goal late in the second quarter. The only Raider score of the second half came on a third quarter four-yard run by Nicholas Heath.
The Raiders totaled up 323 yards of offense on the night with 255 yards rushing and 68 yards passing. In the rushing game, Nicholas Heath was the leading rusher. Heath had 110 yards on 17 carries. Hudson Brakefield had 60 yards on seven carries. Garrett Brakefield had seven yards on one carry. Braxton Sheldon added one yard and one carry. Colton Williams had 14 yards on two carries.
In the passing game, Garrett Brakefield was five for six, good for 68 yards. He threw one interception. Brakefield connected once with Travis Rawls for six yards, once with Kyle Bolton for 17 yards, once with John Michael Whatley for eight yards and twice with Zach Rockett for 37 yards.
The Raiders will be in action at home tomorrow night. This will be a district matchup against the St. Aloyisius Flashes. The Raiders are 4-0 in district play while St. Al is 3-1. The Raiders need a victory to claim the district championship and it should prove to be a good game.
Head Coach Boyd Cole had these comments earlier in the week:
“This week the Raiders are going to be playing for the outright district championship. We are 4-0 and with a win we will make a complete turn around from last year.
“It has been a really good season so far but we want to end the regular season on a nine-game winning streak.
“St. Al brings a very good football team to Joe Meeks Field on Friday night and we need all of our Raider Nation to come out. Thanks for all of the support this year.”
Hey Raider fans, Friday night, Joe Meeks Field. Kickoff, 7 p.m. See ya there.
