Riverfield wins two of three games in series

The Riverfield Academy Raiders were in a three game district series against the River Oaks Mustangs last week.

The Raiders won two out of the three games played, upping their district record to 5-4 and giving them a spot in the MAIS 2A playoffs.

Game one of the series was played at Riverfield on Tuesday, March, 31. The Raiders took the victory by a score of 2-1.

River Oaks took an early lead in the game, scoring their only run of the night in the top of the second inning.

The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Raiders rallied, scoring their two runs in the game.

The scoring rally started off with Mathew Weems getting on base on a single. Jonah Kennedy then walked and Marc Simmons singled, loading the bases. Brennan Morris then singled, driving in the first run as Weems came in from third. Kennedy stole home on a River Oaks passed ball at the plate, giving the Raiders a 2-1 advantage that held through the seventh inning for the victory.

Kennedy was the starting pitcher for the Raiders. He struck out eight, walked two and allowed three hits. Chase Eppinette relieved Kennedy in the fifth inning. Eppinette struck out seven batters.

Games two and three of the series were originally scheduled as a double header at river Oaks on Friday, April 3. Game two was played on that date with the Raiders losing 7-1. Game three was postponed until Saturday afternoon due to thunderstorms that had moved into the area.

Games three turned out to be a great Saturday afternoon battle. At the end of seven innings, the Raiders rode home with a 7-5 victory.

Big hitters in the game included Marc Simmons with three singles and one RBI; Brennan Morris with one single and one RBI; Noah Wroten with two singles and one RBI; Chase Eppinette with two singles, a double and an RBI; Cody Hixon with a single; George Word with a single and a double; Nathan Barham with a single and a double; John Kevin Greer with two singes and two RBIs; and Matthew Weems with two singles.

Jonah Kennedy was the starting pitcher and was relieved by John Kevin Greer in the sixth inning.

The Raiders will be in action this week with a home game against Claiborne Academy on Thursday, April 9, and a road trip to Adams County Christian School in Natchez on Friday, April 10. Play off action will be the following week.
