Diabetes program promotes healthy living

The Support Group of the Delhi Hospital Diabetes Self-Management Program gathered on April 9 to learn about bucket gardening, led by Master Gardner, Cynthia Warner.

Each person planted their own tomato plant in a bucket to grow fresh tomatoes for the approaching summer with supplies donated by Maxwell’s Hardware Store of Delhi.

Fun filled and learning activities like this are held every month in conjunction with a series of educational classes that help patients learn more about diabetes.

Our AADE Nationally Recognized Diabetes Self-Management Program is designed to help persons with diabetes gain and maintain better control of their diabetes and feel good about themselves while doing so.

The program’s goal is to teach skills that will enable the people to keep blood glucose levels as close to the normal range as possible.

Delhi Hospital’s staff of Certified Diabetes Educators will work with patients and their provider to help them reach and maintain lifestyle changes to make this goal a reality.

The staff provides instructions on the following Self-Care Behaviors: healthy eating, medications, being active, blood glucose monitoring, problem solving, healthy coping and reducing risks.

Diabetes has an increasing impact on the health of our nation. This costly disease affects greater than 20 million people and is a leading cause of death and disability.

Many people are unaware of how to successfully manage their diabetes.   The hospital’s trained staff wants to help people gain and maintain control of their diabetes as they embark on the road to a more enjoyable, healthy life.

Staff members will develop a plan designed to meet their needs and help plant these seeds of a healthy lifestyle.

Interested people are asked to speak with ther provider about their interest in attending the hospital’s education classes, or phone the office and the staff will make the necessary contacts for the referral.

Even if a person has had diabetes for an extended period of time, the program can still help identify and decrease risk factors for developing complications associated with diabetes.
