Scott tribute luncheon slated

The John H. Scott Memorial Fund will sponsor The Louis G. Scott Tribute Luncheon at 1 p.m. Sept. 3 at the Northeast Louisiana Delta African American Museum in Monroe.

The Luncheon, a fundraiser for the Memorial Fund’s scholarships and other programs, is being held in recognition of the legal and community work of Attorney Louis Granderson Scott.

Attorney Scott, legal counsel and former president of the Rev. John H. Scott Memorial Fund, has for over 35 years been living out his father’s dream of having good legal representation for Black people in northeast Louisiana.

He has handled high profile cases like the Jena Six, and some of his cases, such as State v. Carney, have set legal precedence or reaffirmed important principles of law.

He is, however, most proud of cases that have been handled far away from national attention or even local media coverage in which he has been able to save a client from the death penalty or ensure that a poor client received good representation.

He has also served as the town attorney for Lake Providence.

This Southern University Law School graduate served as president of the student body during his undergraduate years at Grambling State University.

He has distinguished himself in community and religious work, such as serving as an original founder of the Town of Richwood, NAACP Man of the Year, organizer of the Martin Luther King annual parade, coordinator for the Renaissance Movement Committee.

He serves as assistant Pastor of North Star Missionary Baptist Church, which was formerly under the leadership of his father, Rev. John H. Scott.

The program, which promises to be uplifting and enjoyable, is scheduled to end at 4 p.m., but Grambling and Southern football fans in the Monroe area or persons enroute to other activities or commitments are still encouraged to stop by the African American Museum in order to honor Attorney Scott and support the John H. Scott Memorial Fund.

Tickets for the Luncheon may be purchased for $30 each ($250 for a table of 10) at www.jhsfund.org/louisgscott.

The John H. Scott Memorial Fund (www.jhsfund.org) was established in 1981 as a living tribute to work and legacy of Rev. John H. Scott, minister and civil rights activist.  Every year, the Fund awards two new scholarships and gifts to deserving public high school graduates from five parishes in northeast Louisiana.
