Tool demonstration set at Poverty Point park

By using little more than the remnants of daily life people left behind, archaeology has helped tell the story of the Poverty Point inhabitants who lived in the area over 3,500 years ago.

Poverty Point World Heritage Site will host a look at the past May 3 as the park hosts a tool demonstration. The program will consist of how the Poverty Point inhabitants made and used stone tools. It includes “hands on” artifacts display, with audience participation encouraged.

The event will run every hour, beginning at 1 p.m. and ending at 4 p.m.

Poverty Point World Heritage Site offers visitors the opportunity to study the culture of area inhabitants from 1600 to 1100 BC.

The $4 admission fee provides access to the area museum, video, hiking trail and tram tours, which are scheduled Wednesday thru Sunday.

Children (12 and under) and senior citizens (62 and over) are admitted free.

Poverty Point is located in West Carroll Parish, east of Monroe on La. 577.

Poverty Point World Heritage Site is open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; for more information call 888-926-5492 toll free or 926-5492 in the Epps area.
