Mississippi River may cause problems for Tensas farmers

Although the Mississippi River is now inching back into it’s banks, it’s not dropping fast enough for area farmers.
Harvest time is imminent and they are concerned about the local grain elevators being rendered unusable due to the high water.
Farmers Grain elevator at Waterproof is currently closed, due to the entrance road being submerged.
Although the river looms nearby, Bunge elevator in St Joseph remains open.
Hopes are that the water will continue to recede in Waterproof and the entrance road at Farmers Grain will dry enough to support trucks before harvest is in full swing.  Alternatively, farmers in the St Joseph/Waterproof area may have to haul their crops as far as Wisner or Vidalia, which would not only be an inconvenience, but would add to fuel costs and time constraints.
In addition, grain elevators at other locations may not have space for the surplus, which would cause the farmers to have to store their grain until it can be accepted.  This could mean the difference between selling grain at September market prices versus August market prices.
