Riverfield beats Rivers Oaks

The Riverfield Raiders gained their second win of the season this past Friday night as they traveled to Monroe and defeated the River Oaks Mustangs by a score of 34-0.
In what seemed to be one of the fastest moving first halves I have ever witnessed, the Raiders put 19 points on the board.
The Raiders first ball possession of the game ended in a two-yard touchdown run by Cole Garrett, Caleb Clark added one on the PAT and at the end of the first quarter it was 7-0 in favor of the raiders.
As the second quarter got under way and the Raiders took possession of the game, Garrett Brakefield broke lose on a 51-yard touchdown run. The PAT failed but the touchdown upped the the Raiders lead to 13-0.
The third Raider ball possession of the night ended in a 16-yard touchdown run by Cole Garrett. Once again the PAT failed but with just 59 seconds left in the half, the Raiders were up 19-0. With only three ball possessions in the first half, the Raiders scored three times and went into half time with a comfortable lead.
The second half seemed a little slower. The Raiders, however, continued to dominate the momentum of the game.
Midway through the third quarter, the Raiders scored again on an 18-yard run by Cole Garrett. Garrett Brakefield added two on the PAT to take the lead to 27-0.
The only real Mustang challenge of the game came late in the third quarter when they had the ball inside the Raider 10 yard line. A pass interference called moved them to the three yard line. With fourth and goal on the three, the Raider defense stopped the Mustang Rush and took possession of the ball back.
The Mustangs were also plagued with fumbles throughout the contest. They turned the ball over four times on fumbles. Raider defenders Jacob Wright, Kyle Bolton, Jakes Williams and Kincaid Ryan all recovered Mustang fumbles for the Raiders.
The final Raider touchdown of the game came early in the fourth quarter when Cole Garrett broke loose on a 65-yard-run. Caleb Clark added one on the PAT and with 11:02 left on the game clock, the Raiders had pretty much sealed the victory with a commanding 34-0 lead -- a lead that held until the final horn sounded.
The Raiders tallied up 375 yards of offense on the night with 329 yards gained rushing while 46 yards were gained with the pass. Cole Garrett was the leading rusher in the game with 158 yards. Garrett scored four touchdowns. Garrett Brakefield had 128 yards rushing and scored one touchdown.
Zack Carnegie Hudson Brakefield Nicholas Heath all added to the rushing effort with 30, 15 and 13 yards respectively. Garrett was two for four in the passing game completing passes to Travis Rawls and Ty Sheldon.
The big win over the Mustangs was another great morale boost for the team. Not only that, the fans enjoyed it, too. Every Raider knows it’s always good to beat River Oaks. The Raiders will take to the road again this week, traveling to Jackson, Miss., to take on the Hillcrest Academy Cougars.
Head Coach Boyd Cole had these comments earlier this week:
“It feels good to be back on a winning streak only if it is two games. River Oaks and Riverfield have always been a big game for both schools. Last year, they got the better of us 44-32 and the kids were determined to not let it happen again.
“Our defense placed another outstanding game. Coach Stracener had them very well prepared.
“Offensively, our offensive line lead led our team from the very beginning.
“We play Hillcrest in a big district game this week, so Raider fans come over to Mississippi and support your Raiders.”
Hey Raider fans, Hillcrest Academy in Jackson, Miss. Tomorrow night at 7 p.m.. See ya there.
