Outlook

Hello, hello to all of you special folks who may now be scanning the Richland Beacon News to see what may be of interest this week.  I don’t know the exact date when the children will get of school for the summer; but, I am sure that I can tell when that event does happen since there will be no activity near my home where the bus  drivers park their cars or trucks during the day.

So, what have I been up to lately?  As usual,I began this week by attending Sunday School and worship service on Sunday at Woodlawn Baptist Church.  I always enjoy being in the older ladies class and we do have some pretty lively discussions among our group.  We usually keep up with whatever is happening among our children and grandchildren.  And, I was happy to receive a telephone call this week from my sweet granddaughter, Kristi Wiggins, who teaches school at Mangham.  She was kind of checking on me since she knew that her parents (my son, Kirby and wife, Linda) were vacationing in Colorado this week.

Kirby has called me a couple of times from Denver where his  son, Kevin lives and works there.  Kirby was actually born in Colorado and he kind of likes to keep up with events which happen there through the years. And, I admit that I also have fond memories of the two years that we were residents there.

CHUCKLE #1 - A  meek-looking man arrived in hell.  But, rather strangely, he immediately began conducting himself with considerable arrogance.  “Hey, you!” cried Satan, not at all pleased with such bluster.  “You act as if you owned this dump.”

“Well, I sort of figure that I do” replied the new arrival. “My wife, my boss and my neighbor certainly gave it to  me often enough through many years.”

So. we move on into this month of May and I give a little thought as to what will happen during those hot months of June, July and August.  Thus far, I have not had to turn on any air-conditioning; but, I know that will happen pretty soon.  As I have said before, I just try to take care of things like that when they happen.  And, I am really  thankful for modern day conveniences because I grew up on a rural farm in SE Arkansas and we had no modern conveniences such as electricity and indoor plumbing.

I remember those Saturday nights when we would tune into the ˝Grand Ole Opera on our battery operated radio.   Oh, yes, that was the highlight of the week for our family which consisted of my Mom and Dad since all three of my brothers were in the US Army during the World War Ii days.  And, thankfully, they all made it home safe and sound.  My oldest brother did report later on that he had cut his finger on a can opener when he was serving in Europe and he was offered a Purple Heart medallion; but, he refused to accept such an award

since it was usually given to those wounded in combat duty.

CHUCKLE #2 - The doctor answered his phone and heard a meek voice which said, “This is Mr. Williams,  doctor.   My wife has just dislocated her jaw.”

“That’s too bad,” replied the doctor.  “I will be right over.”

“Oh, no hurry,  doctor,”  the voice hastened to assure him.  “Any time in the next few weeks will be just fine.”

As we continue on through this month of May, I have two or three little “projects” which I hope to take care of before the weather gets really hot.   I do enjoy watching some of the game shows on TV and I marvel as the  contestants win trips to far-away places.  I have no desire to travel to any distant country; but, I am happy that other folks still like to travel.  And, I do have sweet memories of those days when I did travel with my family.

I am also a member of “”Saints  Alive”  which is composed of mostly older folks and they operate from their base at First Baptist  Church here during the summer months. But, I don’t try to make all the meetings........

Anyway, I look forward to the coming weeks and months and I plan to take part in various activities if and when it is convenient for me to attend.

And folks are still having birthdays and I have a few to list as follows:  Wanda Boren on 5/14; Brent Finley and Doug Moore on 5/16; Phyllis Jones, Michael Grissom, Randy Stephens and J. D. Williams on 5/18; Sandra Hogg, Kristi Williams, Linda Speight and Jayne Turner on 5/19.  May all of these folks enjoy a special celebration of their natal day and we wish them many, many more Happy Birthdays in the coming years.  Oh, yes.......

So, that will bring another Outlook effort to a close for this week and I hope to meet all of you dear readers next week in the same way and same time.  Oh, yes, that is my “game plan” for each and every week.
