Betty Jene Bennett Welke, wife, beloved mother and grandmother departed from this world on Thursday, April 21, 2016 at the young age of 73.
She departed from this world at home in Hackberry, LA where she had lived for the last 20+ years. She was born on Tuesday, October 24, 1944. She was born in Richland Parish to Clyde Bennett and Fannie Mae Carey.
Betty raised four children and when she was 50 years old, she went back to school and got her nursing degree. She worked for the next 15 years as a nurse in Sulphur, LA. Betty loved reading and doing crossword puzzles. Two of her favorite authors were Harlan Coben and Lisa Jackson. She also had a green thumb and loved gardening. Her love of gardening also gave way to her love of hummingbirds. Every year she hung her hummingbird feeders out and watched them feed from her rocking chair on the porch.
Betty Jene Bennett Welke is survived by her husband, Mark Welke of Hackberry LA; her four children, Jeffrey Alan Wyatt (Pam) of Delhi, LA; Donna Marie Wyatt of Livingston, MT; Marcus Antone Wyatt (Amanda); and Clinton Travis Wyatt of Delhi, LA. She also has eight grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her granddaughter, Brittainy Wyatt and her sisters Margaret Ruth Busby, Geneva Taylor, Erma Yarborough, Wanda Sue Fatheree and her brother Elmer (Toot) Bennett. She is survived by the following siblings: Claudia Bowlin of Bastrop, LA; Gerry Coleman of Bastrop, LA; Frances Annette Graham of Bastrop, LA; W. C. Bennett of Ft Myers, FL; and Jimmy Don Bennett of Panacea, FL.
No service was held for Betty. She did not want a big to-do made over her death. She donated her body to Louisiana State University – School of Science to help others learn in the medical field. If anyone would like to make a donation to their local library in her name, she would have really loved that. She was an avid reader. She will be greatly missed by everyone in her family.
